We set the citizens off, but what they do next is up to them. So instead you have to send your lawdudes to get to the criminal (or "criminal) before he gets lynched/killed. In a post-apoc society people will probably just execute or lynch the criminal on sight - that could be a mechanic actually - I'm imagining early on seeing your citizens handle it, but eventually you want to enter a more centralized society, so you need to create a proper criminal law system.

There's also a lot of other interesting and dare say weird law systems and methods - Trial by Combat, anyone? Sorta like how early Rome worked.Ĭriminal Law as we know in the modern day started with Roman Law. So don't be a immense degenerate, or your father will give you a post-natal abortion. Pater Familias: Essentially, head of the tribe/clan/household pretty much exercises power of life and death over all those under him. Nothing says "stop murdering, bitches" like breakin' on wheelin'. Public Vengeance: Public penalties, cruel penalties to Pour Encourage Les Autres if you know what I mean. Seems to tend toward cruel penalties, but I guess that depends on where one is. Punishment is a castigation to purify the wrongdoing and save the soul of the wrongdoer. Divine Vengeance: Theocratic Law as state law. Another further evolution was Composition ( Compositio), which allowed for the parties involved to settle the case not with a equal punishment, but with a proportional payment - Wergild and such. Lex Tallionis (an eye for an eye, as people often say) seems like something barbarous today, but at the time it was progressive as fuck because it created the idea of punishment proportional to the crime. Can lead to things like tribal/clan fighting and rivalry because X killed Y's brother, Z, so Y kills X, then X's cousins murder Y, and so and and so forth. Often disproportionate to the crime, so you get stuff like thieves being killed on sight, and good ol' lynchings. Private Vengeance: Crime occurs, and usually the victim/friends/family/tribe react on their own way. We usually class the phases of Penal Law. There are some pretty bizarre laws, such as ordering people to be celebrities.Ĭlick to expand.Would such choices even happen in a post-apoc enviroment? I study Law and proper penal systems tend to evolve as society grows in complexity. Each will have a unique weather/terrain "perk". There are already environments ranging from deep canyons to arctic islands. I think they might be pissed if you don't do it their way. The plot of the game is the government sent you out to rebuild society.

The core focus will be trying to keep the last city on earth alive. One of the rewards on Kickstarter is being able to write backstory for such places. Better to create a great sandbox and layer plot on top of it.

I'd love a campaign myself as well, because I'm a writer, but one step at a time. It is sandbox only, because the sandbox is so big every game should have so many stories within itself. Your opinion definitely matters, it all helps! (Brazil, third world? Come on.) You can also sign-up for updates and find out a bit more on the game via our website. If you have any questions or first impressions of the game, I’d love to hear this forum’s impressions. You can also vote for the game on Steam Greenlightand help us out there. You never know who is going to turn up on your borders. Whatever you choose modifies the simulation. Will you execute them? Exile them? Re-educate? Lock them up for life? We’re offering lots of choices and solutions and many issues to deal with as you try and build/grow your town. You must decide how your town sentences murderers. Each of them will have different traits and personalities.įor example, a murderer might come to your town. Or a tyrant-saint?Īs you struggle to expand your settlement, new survivors will arrive. Now it is your chance to rebuild them – however you see fit.

It should appeal to city-building/sim fans and rpg players who love making tough moral choices in their games.Ītomic Society is set after a devastating nuclear war reset the laws of civilisation. Someone on this forum already backed our game on Kickstarter (so the analytics tell me) so I thought I'd best tell you a bit more about it.
